                                            Cesarean Awareness

                                            Picture
With a national cesarean rate of 33%, and a rate of almost 50% in some areas of the country, we feel the calling to bring awareness to this epidemic. We do not believe that 1/3 or more of women cannot birth without surgery! How many of these surgeries are "unnecesareans"? In addition, we feel a strong calling to transform the experiences of women who do require a cesarean from a terrifying experience they go through mostly alone to one which is family and woman-centered. Because of this calling to women, we are in the process of starting an ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network) Chapter here in New Mexico. As members of ICAN, we can positively influence hospital policies, educate the general public, and provide post-cesarean support. Together we CAN make a difference!

The Changes We Would Like to See

                                            Picture
~ A more woman and family-centered cesarean procedure that allows the woman to choose elements that she may have in her original birth plan.
~ The use of surgical techniques that maximize the health and safety of mother and baby (such as the "slow cesarean" and delayed cord clamping) and maximize the mother's potential for a VBAC (using double closure techniques).
~ Women having access to their birth partner throughout the surgery preparation, not just right before the baby is delivered.
~ The woman having the option of having her doula with her throughout the procedure in addition to her birth partner.
~ In the event of a homebirth transfer, the woman having access to her midwife throughout the procedure and recovery, in addition to her birth partner.
~ Awareness about VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) options, risks, and benefits, as well as access to supportive care-providers.
~ An emotional and educational support network for women who have recently undergone a cesarean surgery.
~ A more educated public about the risks of cesarean versus vaginal birth.
